Fukuoka Regional Immigration Bureau After Five Years

Our initial experience of the Immigration Bureau visit was the then "notorious" Kawasaki, so we still feel nervous whenever we have to visit the office.

Time flies; Siddharth had to renew his VISA as the Spouse of a Japanese national after five years, which got to expire on 12th September. Since we had to leave Japan on the 23rd of this month, we visited the immigration bureau on the 13th, telling our travel plan while submitting.

The kind officer reassured us that when the applicant needed to leave Japan during the renewal application, the expiry would be automatically extended by two months. Also, he stapled a paper with the passport written in English stating that "this passport holder is applying for Japan VISA renewal, and it's legal to travel during the period mentioned here even if the original VISA is expired." We had little anxiety and left the office peacefully.

On this Monday, 19th June, only on the fourth business day of the submission, I received a phone call from the bureau informing me that the VISA was already approved and asked us to collect it anytime on or before the trip. They accelerated the process after knowing about his disembarkation. Needless to say, no "facilitation fee" was asked for the fast process!
